Darryl Strawberry Sued In Unpaid Fruit And Vegetable Bill Dispute

Former New York Mets and Yankees star Darryl Strawberry is being sued amid claims he reneged on a massive fruit and vegetable bill worth nearly $2,700.

According to TMZ, new V&J Produce Corp. claims Strawberry made the order on behalf of his NYC restaurant Strawberry’s Sports Grill but, despite several shipments from the retailer, never made good on payment. Besides the $2,694 bill, the company is also seeking $500 in attorney fees for a grand total of $3,194.

Representatives for either Strawberry or the company have yet to respond. Strawberry, now 50, was the toast of NYC during the late 1980s and early 90s before succumbing to a drug and alcohol addiction that robbed him of much of his promise.

The 6-foot-6 left-handed slugger with the long, looping swing drew instant comparisons to the likes of Ted Williams and his long, prodigious homers became legendary.

During his 17-year-career, he helped lead the Mets to a 1986 title and the Yankees to three more in 1996, 1998 and 1999. He once made eight straight All-Star Game appearances and finished his career with 335 homers.

In 1998, Strawberry was diagnosed with colon cancer, but triumphantly made a return to the diamond and the Yankees the next season, playing in a reserve role and on a limited basis.
