Jay-Z NBA Agent? Rapper Becomes Certified To Represent Basketball Players Once Stake In Brooklyn Nets Sold

Hip hop star and businessman Jay-Z is now a legitimate NBA agent, according to ESPN.

The man who was once lyrically boasted “I’m not a businessman, I’m a business man” thus adds that distinction to a resume that also includes film producer, restaurant owner and record label owner.

Ron Berkowitz, a spokesperson for the Roc Nation Sport firm Jay- Z launched earlier this year, told ESPN his boss officially became certified by the National Basketball Players Association over the last several weeks, but he is unsure if he directly plans to represent any clients.

Another source told the website that as of Wednesday, Jay-Z had yet to sell of his interests in the Brooklyn Nets and until he does he probably won’t be representing any players. In the meantime Roc Nation has already signed such high-profile stars as Robinson Cano, Victor Cruz, DeSean Jackson, Geno Smith and the WNBA’s Skylar Diggins. The firm is also rumored to be close to inking Oklahoma City Thunder star forward Kevin Durant.

According to ESPN, Roc Nation partnered with Creative Artists Agency to do Cano's contract negotiations since the company doesn't have an MLB agent on its roster. Smith's contract will be negotiated by Kim Miale, Roc Nation's new NFL agent who has very little experience.

On Wednesday, NFLPA officials met with Miale to determine if Jay-Z, who is still not certified with the NFL, violated the union's "runner rule." The rule says that anyone who is not certified cannot recruit players, yet Smith, the Jets' rookie backup quarterback, tweeted a picture of himself sitting in the same room with Jay-Z. The outcome of the meeting between the NFLPA and Miale is not known.
