Salmonella Scare Triggers Massive Pet Food Recall

New England-based pet food maker Natura has issued a massive recall of several of its dog and cat food brands after Federal Drug Administration officials uncovered salmonella in at least one of their products.

According to Fox News, the company is also recalling food from its ferrets product line produced over the last seven days. Fox News channel added the recall includes dry pet food and biscuit treats made under brands Innova, California Natural, EVO, Healthwise, Mother Nature and Karma and with an expiration date prior to June 10 2014.

"We are taking the additional precautionary measure," company officials announced in a press release. "Our first priority is the well-being of the pets we serve.”

While a single positive test for a contaminant usually leads to a limited recall, just covering a few days' worth of pet food production, Natura has chosen to recall everything produced more than a week ago, when they implemented additional product testing procedures.

Government officials are warning all pet owners that if their animal shows any symptoms of stomach distressing, you should immediately seek treatment for the animal. They add that any pet owner owning food included in the recall should dispose of it immediately.
