Former CNN news anchor Soledad O’Brien is teaming with fellow “Today” show alum Bryant Gumbel as a reporter for HBO’s “Real Sports.”

The cable network announced Wednesday O’Brien will work as a featured reporter on the monthly magazine show, with her first story about war veterans who use martial arts to help cope with post-traumatic stress disorder airing later this month.

''It's exactly what I've been doing for a long time - telling stories about human beings and their struggles,'' O’Brien told Yahoo! Sports.

O’Brien, 46, most recently worked as a morning-show host on CNN before top execs decided to completely revamp the show and replace her with the tandem of Chris Cuomo and Kate Balduan. Though her experience with sports reporting has been limited, she did play rugby while attending Harvard, where she will also return this year as a visiting fellow in the school’s Graduate School of Education program.

O’Brien’s new HBO deal also gives the network first options on projects created by her Starfish Media Group production company. O’Brien’s work in the area of creating and selling documentaries is well known and respected.

A separate deal she has with CNN to continue her much-acclaimed “Black in America” series when continue unchanged, Yahoo! reported.
