Arrested 396 Times, Chicago Woman Set To Undergo Mental-Evaluation
A Chicago woman has been arrested a staggering 396 times over the last 35 years, including a charge of attacking a city alderman that she pled guilty to just this week.
Shermain Miles also pleaded guilty to trespassing and public drinking in separate cases and was sentenced to time served after she agreed to undergo a mental health evaluation, according to The Chicago Sun-Times.
“All of us are reaching out to you and offering you, maybe for the first time in your life, a hand, OK?” Judge Peggy Chiampas told Miles, the Sun-Times reported. “But you’ve got to reach out and grab all of our hands as well.”
The paper added Miles graciously thanked the judge and told her “I’m not that person.”
According to Sun-Times, since 1978 police have taken Miles into custody at least 92 times for theft, 65 for disorderly conduct, 59 for prostitution-related offenses and five for robbery or attempted robbery. Over that time, she’s known to have used at least 83 aliases.
Miles told the court she is homeless and since December has been held at the Logan Correctional Center in nearby Lincoln. The Sun-Times reports she was released from prison in April of 2011 after serving three years for armed robbery, but soon returned to custody after violating her parole.
The paper added in the vast majority of cases, Miles is arrested, released and never convicted. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office counts 73 total convictions against her.
