Georgia police are investigating the toppling of a monument dedicated to a relative of First Lady Michelle Obama.

According to ABC News, police were called to suburban Atlanta scene sometime over the last several hours where they found the stone monument had been pushed over and in needs of inspection for potential cracks.

Clayton County Commissioner Sonna Singleton told ABC the monument is dedicated to the memory of Melvina Shields, a great-great-great grandmother of Michelle Obama’s and was erected about a year ago.

ABC also reported Shields was born into slavery in the mid-1800s and later settled in nearby Rex, Ga., about 15 miles outside of downtown Atlanta.

Michelle Obama was born and raised in Chicago and attended Princeton University, where she graduated cum laude in 1985. From there, it was on to Harvard, where she earned her law degree before returning to Chicago to work at an area law firm. It was there that she met her husband and the two were married on October 3, 1992.

As First Lady, the thrust of her activities have focused on current social issues such as support of military families, helping working women balance the dual responsibilities of career and family and promoting national service.
