According to ESPN, Ronaldo was sent off late in the game while the score was tied. Ronaldo kicked Cordoba's left back, a move he apparently made out of frustration over his inability to escape the close marking he endured throughout the contest.

After begin given a red card, Ronaldo briefly scuffled with two players from Cordoba before leaving the pitch. As he was leaving, he reacted to the jeering from the stands by displaying and pointing to the "World Club champions" badge on his Real Madrid uniform.

Ronaldo did eventually apologize for his actions on Twitter, saying that they had been impulsive and inappropriate.

La Liga president Javier Tebas did acknowledge Ronaldo's apology and say that it was something that people should appreciate. "It's not up to me [the punishment], that's for the Federation's Competition Committee," Tebas said. "I'd rather focus on the apology from Cristiano afterwards. Unsportsmanlike behaviour isn't good for La Liga, Cristiano was unsporting but I'll stick with the fact he wasn't but apologised. I like to look for the positive and I appreciated his apology and that's something we value."

Ronaldo leads the Spanish Primera Division in goals scored, and he is second in assists. Real Madrid are currently atop the table, edging out rival Barcelona by one point. He will be able to return on February 7, when Real Madrid plays cross-town rival Atletico Madrid.
