New Orleans Saints Ownership Drama: Relatives Sue Art Benson After He Cuts Them Out of Franchise Plans

As the New England Patriots' 'Deflategate' scandal rocks the national headlines, a second smaller but no less juicy NFL scandal is taking place out of the limelight.

This week New Orleans Saints (and Pelicans) owner Tom Benson made a major shift in his plan of succession for both franchises. The alteration would pass control of the teams over to his third and current wife, Gayle. The move also completely cut out Benson's daughter and grandchildren, and those family members have sued in response.

NOLA.com has a great, in-depth report of the entire ordeal, but suffice to say this family feud has gotten ugly. The suit filed by Benson's daughter, Renee, alleges that Gayle is "a gold-digging opportunist who has taken advantage of her husband's unfit state of health and ostracized family members in grasping for power and riches."

It further alleges that Gayle has resorted to such tactics as isolating Benson from his family during holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, removed photographs of family from their house, keeping him on a diet of mostly "candy, ice creams, sodas, and red wine," and replacing Benson's entire household staff, the crew of his boat, and doctors with new individuals she hand-picked.

Honestly, you'd otherwise have to turn on a televised soap opera or go see a revival of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to see family drama this complicated. Read the full story here.
