Report: Jay-Z, Geno Smith May Have Violated NFL Agent Rules In Secret Meeting

USA Today is reporting that New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith did indeed speak with Roc Nation Sports founder and hip hop legend Jay-Z prior to inking a deal with the startup agency.

Despite ongoing denials to the contrary, the paper reports a source claims not only did the two speak, Smith never even met Kim Miale, the Boston-based certified agent that will handle contract negotiations for him, and she was more or less assigned to him by the firm.

The source also told the paper Smith made it clear he had spoken to Jay-Z, which would be in violation of the league’s “runner rule.” Besides Smith, Miale has just two inactive clients registered with the NFLPA — kicker Carlos Martinez, currently with the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League, and former University of Florida linebacker Brandon Hicks.

The NFLPA has now launched an investigation into Smith’s dealings with Roc Nation. The second round pick and his new boss recently posted a picture on Instagram under the caption "Ballin til they ban us! #rocboys" The picture has since been deleted.

Per the “runner rule,” only certified agents are allowed to recruit players and Jay-Z is not a certified agent nor has he applied to take the standardized test. The New York Giants Victor Cruz, New York Yankee Robinson and WNBA rookie Skylar Diggins have all also inked recent deals with Roc Nation.
