Authorities are now left to unravel the puzzling mystery of just what became of Cullen Finnerty after a three-day search not far from his home tragically turned up the body of the former college quarterback star this week.

The 30-year-old former Grand Valley State football star was reported missing on Sunday while fishing near his family’s neighboring cottage. His body was found about a mile from he was last reported seen.

Lake County Undersheriff Dennis Robinson told reporters his body was not in the water when it was found, but in a wooded area not far from the lake. Robinson added that Finnerty had talked with family members late Sunday, when he complained “he was nervous about something.”

“This is the last place I would pick to fish,” Sheriff Robert Hilts told The New York Daily News, citing logjams and dense brush. “It’s a very tough rive to navigate.”

Joined by several of his former coaches and current members from the Grand Valley State, state police and fire departments fanned out across a square-mile area of Webber Township Tuesday in an exhaustive search north of Grand Rapids. Police said they also tracked his cell phone until it went dead over the course of the search.

Finnerty lead Grand Valley State to three Div. II national titles and more than 50 wins during his four seasons as a starter. The 6-foot-3, 230 pounder also briefly played for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos.
