Joe Flacco News: Agent Says Super Bowl Champs Made Mistake Not Paying QB Sooner

The negotiations are long over, but the agent for Baltimore Ravens star quarterback Jos Flacco still isn’t taking any prisoners.

Joe Linta told USA Today the team made a dumb move in not signing his client before last season, during which he led the Ravens to an improbable Super Bowl winning run.

Flacco’s reward was a six-year, $121 million extension, putting the Ravens in the enviable position of having to purge its roster of other key players to remain in line with team salary restrictions. Some Ravens fans have criticized Flacco for his single-mindedness, but don’t expect Linta to being agreeing with them anytime soon.

Linta told the newspaper he feels “no sympathy” for the Ravens and points out they could have signed Flacco to a much friendlier salary-cap deal sometime sooner. Linta points to one earlier instance where he thought the two were on the verge of striking a deal as yet more evidence of the team’s boneheaded behavior.

“The hangup was over $1 million six years from now,” he told USA Today. “I've never in my life seen a dumber move. I guess people can say, 'Well, Joe was dumb, too.' It could have been [dumb], God forbid, if he got hurt. But $1 million to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti six years from now? That's like 100 bucks for you or me today."

Even with Flacco’s massive payday, Linta knows all the dealing still may not be done. The Ravens likely will be forced to try to restructure Flacco's contract before the 2016 season as his deal is scheduled to carry a $28.55 million cap figure that season.

"I'm not apologetic for the fact this is really a three-year deal, there's no way they can afford $29 million a couple of years from now,'' Linta told the newspaper. "I'm not apologetic. They chose to walk away.''
