Arjen Robben scored in the 89th minute Saturday to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 win over German rival Borussia Dortmund to win the Champions League final in London. With the win, Bayern ends four years of disappointing exits in Europe's biggest tournament.
Bayern was locked in a 1-1 deadlock before Robben ran on to Franck Ribery's backheeled flick-on in the area and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller. The win gives Bayern its first Champions League victory since 2001. The German team had lost two of the last three finals.
Mario Mandzukic scored Bayern's only other goal to give the team the lead in the 60th minute at Wembley Stadium. Ilkay Gundogan responded with a successful penalty spot eight minutes later, after defender Dante fouled Marco Reus in the area.
The win marks the end of the tenure under 68-year-old coach Jupp Heynckes. Heynckes was a World Cup and European champion as a player in the 1970s, and had previously coached Real Madrid to a Champions League crown in 1998.
Midway through the season, Bayern Munich had announced the manager's time would be up in the summer, opting to go with Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola. After 50 years as a world-class player and manager, Heynckes ends his career on the highest note possible, winning Europe's most prestigious championship.
Bayern Munich wins it's fifth European crown in club history. The team was also successful in winning the German league Fußball-Bundesliga's championship this season for the 22nd with a league best 91 points and record of 29 wins, four draws and one loss in league play matches.
Bayern dominated league play with an astounding 25 points over their Champions League opponent during the regular season. The team will look to stay dominant in European play as they are currently the fifth richest global soccer club, according to Forbes Magazine and can afford transfer requests of top tier players.
