Air Jordan Shoes Sales Top $2 Billion

More than a decade since his last NBA retirement, Michael Jordan continues to pace the sports industry in at least one lucrative and impressive area.

According to Forbes Magazine, The Jordan sneaker brand accounted for more than $2 billion in domestic sales in 2012, easily outdistancing closest competitor and current two-time league MVP LeBron James, whose Nike signature finished with annual sales of $300 million.

Overall, Nike dominates the market, with three of the top signature sneakers made by the Beaverton, Ore. based conglomerate. Behind James, rounding out the top 5 current players in signature sales are Kobe Bryant ($50 million, Nike), Carmelo Anthony ($40 million, Jordan), Kevin Durant ($35 million, Nike) and Derrick Rose ($25 million, Adidas)  

Impressive as those figures may be, even cumulatively they fall far short to the numbers posted by the Jordan Brand last year, according to Forbes.

The other end of the spectrum, the magazine reported shoes endorsed by Dwight Howard and John Wall struggled mightily, registering just over $5 million in sales for the Adidas and Reebok brand respectively.

Representatives as Adidas seem further emboldened by the numbers posted by Rose, given the former league MVP sat out the entire season recuperating from a torn ACL he suffered on the first round of last year’s playoffs.
