Tony Parker Received Death Threats During Game 1

San Antonio police are investigating death threats received by star Spurs guard Tony Parker during Game 1 of their Western Conference Finals series against Memphis.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to NBC affiliate WOAI they launched an investigation after someone placed a 9-1-1 call threatening Parker’s life during the Spurs Game 1 victory.

“We received a call from San Antonio Police that there was a potential threat against Mr. Parker,” Bexar County Department spokesperson Paul Berry told WOAI. “We immediately increased security both inside the AT&T Center and outside the AT&T Center.”

Authorities also told WOAI the call was made from a payphone and came in with about five minutes remaining in the game. Berry told WOAI officers escorted Parker home after the game.

 Although Berry declined to speculate on what officers believe sparked the call, the All-Star guard shredded the Memphis defense for much of the evening, finishing with a game-high 20 points and nine assists  

Berry also refused to say if Parker was made aware of the threats before the game ended. San Antonio police also acknowledged to WOAI that such threats are more common than one might think, but generally they refrain from making them public in hopes of preventing copycat like repeats.

Game 2 is scheduled Tuesday night, also in San Antonio.
