In more ways than one, Taryn Griffey is proving to be her father’s daughter.

Rated as one of the top 50 high school players in the nation, Ken Griffey Jr.’s daughter announced this week she will be forgoing opportunities to attend one of the country’s more established programs to play for the University of Arizona and be closer to her brother, Trey.

The Arizona women’s hoops teams finished just 12-18 last season, but the thought of being near her brother, a wideout on the Trojan football team apparently tilted the scales toward Tucson for Taryn.

“My family was pretty shocked,” she told Central Florida News 13 of her decision. “I hadn’t said anything because I didn’t really know what I was thinking. “My brother is here and my dad and him were high fiving.”

The Griffey’s’ are legendary for being a tight-knit family, with Ken Griffey once famously playing alongside his father, Ken Griffey, for the Seattle Mariners.

Taryn Griffey also insisted the idea of being the next Brittany Griner, someone credited with helping to build a program from the ground up, also intrigued her.

Before sitting out this year recovering from a torn ACL, Griffey was named the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Class 8A player of the year after leading her Orlando (Fl.) Dr. Phillips High team to a second straight state title.
