New England Patriots: Gronk Needs Fourth Forearm Surgery

After sustaining an infection of some sort, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is slated to undergo a fourth surgery on the right forearm he reinjured during last year’s playoffs.

According to ESPN, aided by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, Dr. Jesse Jupiter of Massachusetts General Hospital will perform the procedure on Gronkowski sometime over the next several days. Jupiter specializes in the care of traumatic and reconstructive problems of the upper limb, including fracture healing and failure to heal.

Besides eradicating the infection, the fourth surgery is expected to replace the plate now in Gronkowski’s forearm. Estimated recovery time is approximately 10-weeks, putting Gronkowski in line to be ready to go around the start of training camp.

Gronkowski originally broke the arm Nov. 18 in a game against the Indianapolis Colts. He returned to action on Dec. 30 in the regular season finale, than broke the forearm again in the AFC divisional round of the playoffs on Jan. 13 against the Houston Texans. NFL.com first reported Gronkowski needed a fourth surgery.

The Patriots and star quarterback Tom Brady are both anticipating and hoping for a speedy recovery from their star receiver. Having lost Wes Welker in free agency, New England is hoping to have an entire training camp for Brady, Gronkowski and all their other receivers to familiarize themselves with new wideout Danny Amendola.
