Notre Dame Football News: Everett Golson Benched Days After Pep Talk From Coach Brian Kelly [VIDEO]

Last week Brian Kelly told reporters he believed Everett Golson could be one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Now he might be ending his college career on the bench.

Golson was absolutely putrid during Saturday's regular season finale, completing only 7 of 18 passes for 75 yards, to go with one interception and a QBR of 8.4. The Fighting Irish were blown out by the USC Trojans 49-14.

In the lead up to this game, Kelly refused to display any lack of trust in his senior quarterback, telling reporters that “we hope that his experience that he got this year and going into USC and in a bowl game that we continue to see development. He could be one of the top quarterbacks in the country, no question."

However, Golson wasn't able to reward his head coach's optimism on Saturday, and was pulled from the action mid-game. Golson finished 2014 with a staggering 22 total turnovers, and struggled with ball security all year.

Golson's play was so dreadful, in fact, that Kelly refused to acknowledge whether he would start for the Irish during Notre Dame's upcoming bowl game.

Golson led the Irish all the way to the national title game in 2012, and entered his senior year with a tremendous amount of hype. Watching his final bowl game from the pine would be a stunning and disappointing capper to a career.
