The bidding process for the 2024 Summer Olympics is getting so hot, it seems like every major US city wants a piece of the action.
Here's what you need to know about every US city's Olympic bid:
Washington DC
An Olympics in our nation's capital would certainly have the pomp and patriotism angle to it. The District's bid committee is also touting the fact that the city has the most sporting facilities of any 40-mile radius, to go with 10,000 hotel rooms. The area around RFK Stadium and the Anacostia River would be the site of the Olympic Stadium and other major action, while lesser sporting events would dot the periphery of the city and surrounding Virginia/Maryland counties.
Los Angeles
The City of Angels is looking for its third summer games, after hosting in both 1932 and 1984. The arguments for LA seem incontestable -- a large, expansive urban landscape and solid infrastructure, celebrities, iconic venues, warm weather. So far, however, LA is said to only be making a "quiet" bid for the game.
San Francisco
With the presence of tech giants like Apple, Twitter, and Facebook, San Francisco and Silicon Valley believes its their time to shine on the sporting stage as well. San Fransisco certainly has the picturesque landmarks and natural scenery for the summer games, but potential traffic congestion (it's already one of the most frustrating cities to drive in) is a major red flag. The city's bid committee would have to lay out serious plans for public transportation to gain serious consideration.
Boston
The strength of Boston's bid rests on two keys points. The first is that everything would be occur within a 3.5 mile radius, allowing for one of the most compact and walkable Olympics in modern history. Secondly, the city would solve the issue of venues by relying on its well-earned reputation as America's no. 1 college town. There's over 100 colleges and universities in Bean Town, and the city's bid committee is keen to take advantge of every one of them. Other city locations like Fenway Park and Boston Common would also be of use.
In addition to these four American cities, foreign metropolises like Casablanca, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Lima, Paris, Istanbul, and others are expected to make formal bids for the 2024 Games.
