Fox NewsDC is reporting Washington Redskins star quarterback Robert Griffin III is engaged to be married sometime this summer.
In a chat with the Fox-owned station, Jackie Griffin reportedly indicated her son is slated to marry college sweetheart Rebecca Liddicoat as early as July 6. She added the wedding has been in the works for a while now, but as is her son’s nature, has been kept closely under wraps.
“You would never know, based on his press conferences and everything he does in the media, but he still has that shyness to him and that quietness to him,” she said. “He loves being at home, quiet to himself. That hasn’t changed.”
Earlier this week the second-year quarterback appeared with his mom at a luncheon for Tanya Snyder, the wife of mega-bucks owner Daniel Snyder, during which he admitted his mom still brings out the softer side in him.
Jackie Griffin later told reporters her son was known as “Robbie” as a child and his older sister used to dress him up as a baby doll. Even now, they still enjoy their own, unique pre-game rituals. “We talk before games,” she said. “I also text him, and I always text him a scripture or something--- whatever the Lord lays on my heart--- to let him know that this is just another battle and you’re gonna do this with God’s help. It works for us.”
Griffin, who graces the latest 15th anniversary cover issue of ESPN The Magazine, is still recuperating from a torn ACL suffered in the Redskins final game last season. He has insisted he plans to be ready for training camp and the start of this year’s regular season.
But for much of this week, only he wanted to talk about is the relationship he shares with mom. “Moms are truly special to everybody,” he said. “My mom holds a special place in my heart.”
