The four drivers left with a chance for Cup glory are Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Ryan Newman and Kevin Harvick. The highest finisher today among these four will bring home the title.
Jeff Gordon sits atop the pole today, despite a great race last week not being enough for him to earn a spot to compete for the championship.
"It hit me hard when I crossed the line at Phoenix. I think I was just really in disbelief for a good 24 hours that we did everything so right and didn't make it," Gordon said.
"That disappointment was definitely there throughout the week. I think even if we win this race on Sunday, that's only going to make it hurt a little bit more in some ways because we could have won the championship if we were here."
Among the contenders Harvick has the highest starting position at fifth. Next is Denny Hamlin in eighth position, with Logano right behind him at No. 9. Ryan Newman didn't have a wonderful qualifying session, checking in at No. 22.
Newman is remaining optimistic that he can come out ahead of the other drivers despite starting well behind them. "It's going to be a crazy race," Newman said. "It's going to be some really crazy restarts, but I don't think your starting position defines who's going to finish there."
