Maria Sharapova Admits Defeat to Serena Williams? Sharapova Says No. 1 Ranking Not a Priority [VIDEO]

Maria Sharapova got exactly what she wanted at the WTA Finals. Or more precisely, she didn't get what she didn't want.

Kpopstarz.com, taking a report from the BBC, indicated that the world's No. 2 player was not disappointed with her results in the season-ending event. Sharapova didn't even advance out of pool play in a tournament in which she could've overtaken nemesis Serena Williams for the No. 1 ranking.

Caroline Wozniacki replacing Maria Sharapova as Serena Williams' rival?

"I got the job done," said the 2014 French Open, champion according to BBC. "I know I'm not moving forward, but I'm proud of that effort and to finish the year off on this way."

Nor will Sharapova be motivated by the attempt to put the "1" before her name in 2015.

Maria Sharapova trolls Serena Williams-Caroline Wozniacki post-U.S. Open celebration?

"I will not be chasing the number one ranking next season," she said. "I think adding more Grand Slams is the top priority."

The problem for Sharapova is that now, she appears to have more than just Williams with which to contend. Williams' best friend, Caroline Wozniacki beat Sharapova at both the U.S. Open and at the WTA Finals.

Sharapova and Williams already have a frosty relationship over barbs about each other's boyfriends last year, and now Sharapova has to deal with an extension of Williams. After the U.S. Open, Sharapova poked fun at the celebration Williams and Wozniacki had after Williams defeated Wozniacki in the U.S. Open finals.

So chasing Grand Slams is fine - Sharapova has five of them - and her health seems to be in order after she started the year still dealing with a shoulder injury. But the fact remains that Sharapova is on a 15-match losing streak to Williams.

Wozniacki has emerged, as has Simona Halep, and if up-and-coming Eugenie Bouchard keeps improving at the rate she did in 2014, then getting the job done in 2015 is going to be much more difficult.

Unless Sharapova really believes that her performance at the WTA Finals really was "getting the job done."
