Vince Young Raiders: Is Vince Young's NFL Career Over?

The Vince Young comeback trail has hit a speed bump, according to reports.

In the wake of back to back impressive workouts, momentum was building and Young’s NFL comeback effort was finally starting to take shape. The Oakland Raiders were said to be immensely interested in signing the one-time Rose Bowl hero. The many personal issues he experienced over the course of his first six NFL seasons, including squandering a small fortune, finally seemed under control.

Then, NFL draft night happened, and the Raiders, to the surprise of most, were able to nab Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson in the fourth round, rendering their pursuit of Young all but a memory.

With Young already on record as saying the Canadian Football League is not an option, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, all of a sudden his options again appear few. And even if he were interested in the CFL, Montreal Alouettes general manager Jim Popp has told multiple sources Young, at best, would only be signed as a backup to 40-year-old starter Anthony Calvillo. The Alouettes hold Young’s CFL rights.

Young’s NFL situation is not unlike the experience of several other veteran players who now find themselves free agents and struggling to find a new team. Longtime Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney remains unsigned, as does former Packers star cornerback Charles Woodson.

Young, who will turn 30 later this month, last played in the league in 2011, serving as Michael Vick’s backup in Philadelphia.
