Adrian Peterson’s dogged determination and steely resolve stand as one of the primary reasons he’s in a class all of his own in today’s NFL. Now the Minnesota Vikings star back is looking to distinguish himself from all who’ve ever played the game, according to reports.
After a year in which he fell just short of the second 2,000 yard rushing season in NFL history and won the league MVP award, Peterson told NFL.com this week that he’s now set his sights on a 2,500 yard season. “It’s something I’m going to focus on early,” he said. “I’ll let the chips fall where they may. .. I’ve got my bar set for 2,500 yards. If I can go over that, the record will be shattered. But ultimately I want a couple rings. You gotta start at one.”
After last year’s 1,991 yard campaign, a season many weren’t even expecting Peterson to be available for after major off-season knee surgery, not many are willing to doubt him this time around. Peterson’s runaway season left him just short of the Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing mark (2,105) and set the stage for his heightened pursuits.
That mindset seems to be gaining traction in Minnesota, where, to a man, the Vikes seem more than confidant about a potential Super Bowl run. “I feel like we have the potential to get to the Super Bowl and win,” said Peterson. “It’s all about coming together as a team.”
With quarterback Christian Ponder benefitting from off-season wideout acquisitions Greg Jennings and rookie Cordarrelle Patterson the Vikes attack figures to be much more potent this season. And on defense, adding first-round defensive tackle Shariff Floyd looms large. But in the end, it all starts and ends with Peterson… and his pursuit for immortality.
