Ivan Turina passed away Wednesday night of a likely heart attack in his Stockholm apartment last night, according to an official statement this morning released by the club. AIK offered their condolences to the family in the statement, saying, "AIK Football thoughts go out to Ivan's partner and two daughters and his other relatives and friends." Turina was 32 years old.
The club also indicated they have informed members of the team and organization of the tragedy in the statement, saying, "AIK Football has informed the team and other employees about what happened. We ask all to respect all parties and allow them to mourn in peace."
Before joininh AIK, he previously played with Greek side Skoda Xanthi and Lech Poznan of Poland.
Turina, was known to have a congenital heart problem, which he told the club about when he signed with them in 2010. "We knew that he had a congenital heart problem but he was completely healthy," AIK chairman Johan Segui said to Expressen.
Turina, who got his first and only cap for Croatia seven years ago in a friendly against Hong Kong, joined AIK from Dinamo Zagreb in 2010 and made 89 official appearances for the club, keeping 35 clean sheets.
Fans gathered at Karlberg to lay scarves and flowers at an impromptu shrine to the Croatian keeper, who had recently extended his contract with AIK until 2016. Flags at the training ground flew at half-mast as players, coaches and staff spoke quietly with the assembled media and supporters.
Antonio Puerta and Miklos Feher are also popular players that passed away due to heart complications.
He is survived by his pregnant wife and two one-year-old daughters.
