CARDINALS vs BREWERS Watch Live Stream Online & Listen: Live Coverage ST. LOUIS

Tonight at 8:15 p.m. ET the first-place St. Louis Cardinals (83-68) will host Game 2 of a three-game set with the Milwaukee Brewers (79-72), who have spent much of 2014 in first place in the NL Central, but now stand four games behind the Redbirds. The Brewers will send Mike Fiers (6-2, 1.84 ERA) to the mound against Adam Wainwright (18-9, 2.56 ERA).

Fiers will be on the mound for the first time since beaning Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton in the face, then hitting his replacement with the next pitch. The Marlins charged the field but cooler heads prevailed for the most part.

The Marlins later admitted they don't believe Fiers intended to injure Stanton, and Fiers said he's been in touch. "Just talked a little bit," Fiers said. "He understands it wasn't on purpose."

Fiers then pleaded to change topics. "I just don't really want to talk about [the Stanton situation]," Fiers said. "I just want to get rid of it and focus on [Wednesday], and the rest of the season."

Fiers has been very effective this season, but he will be up against an true ace in Wainwright who has pitches 17 innings of two-run ball his last two times out.

"When I'm cruising, I'm ahead in the count, throwing all my pitches for strikes, trusting my defense and pounding the bottom of the zone," Wainwright said. "So, doing those things, usually things work out right."

There may not be much time left in the year, but head-to-head matchups are the fastest way for a club like Milwaukee to wedge back into the playoff picture. They're looking to extend their current win streak to three.
