Just two weeks after undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones returned to the gym Thursday. He was originally scheduled to defend his title three weeks from Saturday before the unfortunate injury delayed one of the most highly-anticipated fights in UFC history.
Ronda Rousey Inspired Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza to Use More Judo
Jones will face Daniel Cormier on Jan. 3 at UFC 182. The bout was initially set for Sept. 27 before Jones injured his knee in training. 'Bones' took to his Instagram and posted a video captioned "Two weeks after knee surgery..Phil4:13" to show his progress since his surgery:
In the video Jones throws two kicks and a flying knee with the surgically-repaired leg. Even though he's moving gingerly, the quick turnaround since going under the knife is a testament to the special type of athlete Jones is. Seeing the video makes fans wonder what could have been, considering that UFC 178 would've been hands-down the best fight card of the year had Jones vs. Cormier been the headliner.
Alistair Overeem Defends Himself from Criticism After Injuring Jon Jones
Last month, Jones and Cormier drew heavy media attention after brawling in a hotel lobby after a pre-fight press conference. The rivalry continued to grow as the two traded barbs in interviews and over social media. Fight fans were devastated when the news broke that the fight would be delayed.
Jones injured his knee while defending a takedown from Jackson's MMA teammate Alistair Overeem. This drew the ire of UFC president Dana White, who questioned why Overeem, a heavyweight, was training with Jones in the first place.
