The Eagles topped the Steelers 31-21 on Thursday night, but the team was without the star running back for most of the evening after he left the game in the first quarter with a right thumb injury.

X-rays on McCoy's thumb were negative, but he left the game after his 22-yard touchdown reception that gave Philadelphia a 7-0 lead over their state rivals.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly told ESPN that McCoy's injury was "no big deal," but the running back said that he was still feeling pain when explaining what happened after the game was over

"A helmet hit it," McCoy said, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. "It definitely hurts. But there have been times I've been banged up and it turns out fine. We'll see what happens."

McCoy left the game after carrying the ball four times for 24 yards and said he had no ill-effects from a toe injury that had sidelined him at practice this week. Still, the running back feels like he needs to get some reps in.

"I feel like I've got a lot of work to do," McCoy said. "Feel quick but my legs feel little heavy. It's still early. Need some time be more effective and get in the work mode I need to be effective this year... I feel good, though."

The Eagles will hope that McCoy is good to go when they host the New York Jets next Thursday in the preseason finale at Lincoln Financial Field.

Philadelphia is looking to claim its second straight NFC East division title this season after finishing with a 10-6 record in the first year under Kelly's direction, but failing to go deep in the playoffs after losing 26-24 to the New Orleans Saints in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

McCoy, 26, had a career-year in 2013, reaching career-highs in carries (314), rushing yards (1,607) and rushing yards per game (100.4) while scoring nine touchdowns. McCoy also had 52 receptions for 539 yards and two scores.
