New York Yankees Rumors: Yanks, Cubs Favorites to Land Jon Lester in Free Agency; Boston Reunion a 'Longshot' [VIDEO]

Jon Lester was only traded to the Oakland Athletics a few weeks ago, but that hasn't stopped reports that Lester could be on the move again in the near future.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, when Lester becomes a free agent at the end of the season the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs will be the favorites to land the former Boston Red Sox ace. Heyman also stated that a Lester-Red Sox reunion is a ‘long shot’ and isn't a real option for the two sides at this juncture.

“Still, it's quite a leap from loving his stay in Boston to being likely to return there this winter as a free agent. The reality is, it's probably the opposite. The strong belief around the game is that Lester is likely to sign somewhere other than the Red Sox.

Most folks around baseball would be surprised if Lester and the Red Sox could agree on a contract at a time other teams will be bidding hard for him. After all, the two sides couldn't come close to doing it when they had a clear shot at contract. A return by Lester to Boston was dubbed a "long shot" by league officials who have familiarity with the situation.”

Lester will be one of the more sought after free agents this offseason and is set to cash in with the right team.

The report of the Yankees being interested in Lester isn’t anything new as New York attempted to trade for Lester at the trade deadline. Yankees outfielder and Lester’s former teammate Jacoby Ellsbury has said he will be in contact with Lester when the time is right in order to get the ace to sign with New York.

Lester is quietly having one of his best seasons in the majors as he is 13-8 with an earned run average of 2.58. Since being traded to the Athletics, Lester is 3-1 with a 2.93 earned run average.
