New England Patriots Rumors: Ryan Mallett to Start for Patriots Thursday; Pats' Look to Trade Former Arkansas Stud [VIDEO]

The New England Patriots will move forward with backup quarterback Ryan Mallet for Thursday’s preseason opener with the Washington Redskins after allowing Tom Brady to rest.

The Patriots made the announcement Thursday that they will rest Brady for the entirety of the game and give Mallett extensive work with the first team offense. The Patriots cited the joint practices the team had with the Redskins on Monday and Tuesday as the reason for resting Brady.

Brady himself said that the practices gave him more reps than usual and that the added workload wasn't normal for a week of training camp.

"We got a ton of reps," Brady said earlier this week. "[Monday], I'd say it was probably 80 or 90 reps. [Tuesday] was probably pretty similar. Typically you don't get that in a given week.”

The added reps for Mallett has to play into the Patriots’ plan to attempt and trade the former Arkansas prospect before his contract expires at the end of the year. NFL.com’s Mike Mayock called Mallett ‘a legitimate starting quarterback’ in the NFL last week and the Patriots showcasing his talents can only up the asking price.

Mallett is entering his fourth season with the Patriots after being drafted out of Arkansas in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft. Mallett was seen as a high-profile prospect in college, but his off the field issues scared many teams away from drafting him.

Since being drafted, Mallett has stayed out of trouble and draw rave reviews as to his potential to be a starting quarterback. The Patriots drafted Eastern Illinois University quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round of May’s draft and he is expected to be the heir to Tom Brady when he decides to call it a career.

The Patriots will look to show off Mallett so they can trade him away and make off with a profit from a player they took a chance in 2011.
