After a picture of Johnny Manziel rolling a $20 bill in a bathroom bar surfaced, the Browns have been ‘alarmed’ by their first round pick’s antics since being drafted in May’s NFL draft.
Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns aren’t happy with the quarterback they traded up to draft this past May and believe he has lost significant ground on Brian Hoyer because of it.
“The team was particularly bothered by a picture that surfaced of Manziel rolling a $20 bill in a bar bathroom, suggestive of someone preparing to use snort cocaine. "Some in the organization feel he's lost ground in the quarterback competition heading into camp," adds beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot. Manziel reportedly "regressed in practice" this spring, and team brass believes it resulted from "not enough dedication to the playbook." Sources also told Cabot the Browns "have been stunned by his non-stop antics" off the field. All signs continue to point to Brian Hoyer starting Week 1.”
This may be the first honest report out of Cleveland concerning Manziel, considering that every public mention of the former Texas A&M star points to how pleased they are to have him. The Browns' concern likely stems from Manziel’s promise to tone down his party lifestyle after the team drafted him but done nothing to live up to that promise.
The Browns are dealing with a very eventful offseason when it comes to their roster as wide receiver Josh Gordon is facing a year-long suspension for various run-ins with the law. The recent Manziel news only adds fuel to the flame for first-year head coach Mike Pettine.
Maziel was drafted No. 22 overall by the Cleveland Browns when the team decided to trade up to acquire him. Manziel is expected to compete for the starting quarterback spot, but these recent reports put his Week 1 status in doubt.
