Cleveland Browns Rumors: Brian Hoyer Contract Extension Talks Open, View Him As Bridge to Manziel [VIDEO]

The Cleveland Browns seem to enjoy pouring gasoline on their quarterback situation no matter who is taking the snaps. The Browns have opened up contract extension talks with quarterback Brian Hoyer.

The Browns are looking to lock up the five-year veteran who is scheduled to make $1 million in the last year of his current contract with the team. This news is rather surprising considering the the team drafted their quarterback of the future in Johnny Manziel in May’s NFL Draft.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns view Hoyer as the bridge for Manziel to become the teams franchise quarterback and as a longterm backup for the rookie. Hoyer has made it clear he intends to fight tooth and nail for the starting quarterback spot and expects to be the teams starter going forward.

Hoyer was 2-0 in games he started and finished in 2013 before missing a large part of the season with a torn ACL. When Hoyer was active, the Browns looked like a different team and had one of the better offenses in the league due to Hoyer and wide receiver Josh Gordon’s play.

Hoyer is expected to be ready for all team activities this offseason and it will be interesting to see if the Browns use Hoyer’s success to spark a trade the way the San Francisco 49ers used Alex Smith.
