Below are highlights of all nine goals and brief recaps of each result.
Costa Rica 0-0 England
Goals: None
A scoreless draw between England and Costa Rica saw Los Ticos finish atop Group D with seven points. Chances were few and far between in the mildly entertaining affair. The most noteworthy came in the 23rd minute. A Celso Borges free-kick was parried safely by Ben Foster, allowing both sides to enter the break scoreless. Neither England nor Costa Rica had much to offer from there.
Italy 0-1 Uruguay
Goals: Uruguay—Godin 81'
Uruguay's 1-0 victory over Italy was marred in controversy. A studs-up challenge from Claudio Marchisio saw the Italian sent off in the 59th minute, leaving his team down a man for the remainder of the match. A bite from Luis Suarez in the 79th minute should've leveled the playing field. Suarez, however, would go unpunished. Diego Godin landed the final blow just two minutes later.
Greece 2-1 Ivory Coast
Goals: Greece—Samaris 42', Samaras 90'+3; Ivory Coast—Bony 74'
Injustice saw Greece defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 on Tuesday, seeing the team through to the Round of 16.The 1-0 lead went to Greece thanks to a strike from Andreas Samaris just before the half. Wilfried Bony would respond after the break, burying a right-footed shot from the center of the box. The result for Ivory Coast was there, but in the dying minutes of the match, referee Carlos Vera pointed to the spot. Giorgos Samaras left little doubts with his finish, gifting Greece the 2-1 victory and eliminating the Elephants from the 2014 World Cup.
Colombia 4-1 Japan
Goals: Colombia—Cuadrado 17’ Martinez 55’, 82’ Rodriguez 89’; Japan—Okazaki
Colombia continued to flex its Group C muscle, thumping Japan 4-1 on Tuesday. An opening goal from Juan Cuadrado was countered by a Shinji Okazaki header just before the half, but Colombia was too much for Japan to handle.
