Wimbledon 2014 Update: Sloane Stephens Eliminated in First Round; Snaps Longest Active Fourth Round Streak [VIDEO]

Wimbledon has claimed its first American as Sloane Stephens has been eliminated in the first-round to No. 109 Maria Kirilenko of Russia. Stephens had held the longest active streak of fourth-round appearances at majors by a woman until the American dropped her first match 6-2, 7-6 (6).

Stephens hadn't missed the second week of a major tournament since the 2013 Australian Open. Stephens usually has a strong showing in major tournaments as she hosts a 31-12 record in Grand Slam matches, but a mediocre 55-54 outside of Grand Slams.

The 18th-ranked Stephens got to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2013 before being eliminated by eventual champion Marion Bartoli. Stephens is the first American to be eliminated from Wimbledon and we didn't have to wait long for it to happen.

Other news and notes from early Wimbledon action:

- Former US Open champion Sam Stosur fell 6-3, 6-4 to former US Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer.
- The 43-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 to Ekaterina Makarova of Russia. Date-Krummwas the oldest player entered in the tournament this year
