March Madness: Michigan Cruises To Sweet 16 with VCU Win, 78-53

No. 4 Michigan clinched a Sweet 16 birth with a 78-53 win over No. 5 VCU on Saturday. The Wolverines advance to the NCAA round of 16 for the first time since 1994.

Mitch McGary led Michigan to victory with a season-high 21 points and 14 rebounds. McGary shot 10-11 from the floor in 34 minute of play. VCU failed to answer him around the basket and couldn't create easy baskets with their pressure offense.

The Wolverines also saw four other starters score in double figures. Trey Burke scored 18 points and dished out seven assists. Michigan's NBA pedigree players, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glenn Robinson III, each scored 14 points respectively.

VCU, who have played the role of Cinderella in recent March Madness tournaments, did all they could to stop the Wolverine's mighty offensive attack. Their "HAVOC" defense led to 12 Michigan turnovers. However, their offense struggled, shooting an uncharacteristic 3-for-16 from the 3-point line.
