The Houston Texans have inked overall No. 1 draft pick Jadeveon Clowney to a four-year deal rumored to be in excess of $22 million.

As many as 18 first-round picks from April's draft have now signed, but Clowney's deal is expected to establish the market and produce a rash of other signings.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the deal also holds an option for a fifth-year for the 21-year-old former South Carolina star, who is being counted on to anchor the Texans new 3-4 defense from the linebacker position alongside Pro Bowler J.J. Watt.

Revered for his athleticism at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, Clowney largely played defensive end at South Carolina where he anchored the Gamecocks' 4-3 defensive schemes and earned his reputation as "a freakish, physical specimen."

Jadeveon Clowney work ethic questioned?

In his three seasons at South Carolina, Clowney was named an All-American each season and finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting in 2012.

In his final season at South Carolina, Clowney finished with 35 tackles, 10.5 for loss of yardage and three sacks. Clowney solidified his status as the top overall prospect in this year's draft by running a 4.53 at the NFL Combine in the 40-yard dash.

The Texans recently signed former NFL head coach Romeo Crennel as defennsive coordinator and he has indicated he plans to play to all Clowney's strengths.
