Pittsburgh continues its eight game homestand and looks to win the rubber match while New York hopes to close out its homestand that it's currently 3-5 in on a high note. The Pirates took Game 1 Monday afternoon by a 5-3 margin and the Mets bounced back in Game 2 Tuesday with a 4-2 win.
Charlie Morton (1-6, 3.29 ERA) takes the ball for the Pirates while Bartolo Colon (3-3, 5.34 ERA) mans the mound for the Mets.
Morton was 0-6 to start the season until his last time out when he won against the Washington Nationals despite lasting a season low 5.2 innings and allowing a run on four walks.
"It's not whether you win or lose, it's how long you pitch in the game," Morton said after his outing via MLB.com. "I don't want to throw meaningless innings. I want to have effective innings and hopefully throw a lot of them."
Former Mets and current Pirates first baseman Ike Davis is hitting .338 in 28 games in May while New York third baseman David Wright is second in the National League with 36 hits this month and ranks fourth in the NL overall this season with 64 hits.
Pittsburgh centerfielder Andrew McCutchen is first in the NL with 40 walks and is third in the MLB .434 on-base percentage. Outfielder Starling Marte is fourth in the NL with 12 stolen bases.
New York second baseman Daniel Murphy is third in the league with 64 hits.
The Pirates and Mets close out their three-game set today at Citi Field in Queens.
