The Cleveland Browns have felt their share of criticism for not drafting a wide receiver in what could be called the deepest receiver draft in a decade, but they have answered some of those questions. The Browns have signed both Earl Bennett and Miles Austin to short-term contracts.
The Browns promised they had a plan after not drafting a receiver and with the news of Josh Gordon’s forthcoming suspension they had to move swiftly. Even with Gordon, these two players would have been ideal additions to a corp that has plenty of new addictions, but lack of playmakers.
The Browns are loading up on weapons for the quarterback battle between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel and now they have their choice of who stays and who goes. The Browns depth chart now includes the likes of Austin, Bennett, Gordon, Greg Little and other new additions Nate Burleson and Andrew Hawkins.
The Browns have given themselves a chance to compete with the defense and offensive line talent, but if a few of their receivers come through in the clutch they could be a popular pick to upset some teams. I love these moves by the Browns and with months before a game has to be played, they should bring in as many receivers as possible and see who makes it to opening kickoff. Look for Austin to replace Gordon during his suspension and the other additions to find their place among the offense.
