The Big East is considering a name change with "The America 12 Conference" considered as the favorite, league sources told ESPN. The league's presidents have not yet officially approved the name and conference is still considering several other names.
However, the domain name America12.org was purchased and registered by Covington & Buling on Tuesday, according to WhoIs domain-registration data.
The Big East's law firm also registered other variations of America 12 on Tuesday, including America12Conference.com, America12Sports.com, American12.org, American12conference.com, AmericaTwelve.com and TheAmerica12Conference.com.
With the Catholic 7 schools seeking to start a new conference and using the Big East name on June 30, the current football schools must find a new name for the conference by July 1.
The Big East football universities are not expected to add a 12th school until 2015, when Navy joins the league. In 2013, the conference will have 10 members, with Louisville and Rutgers departing. The schools will be replaced by East Carolina and Tulane the following year.
