Jabari Parker one and done, declares via open letter; Future method of announcing intentions for underclassman [VIDEO]

Duke’s stellar freshman Jabari Parker announced Thursday he will enter the NBA Draft instead of returning to Duke for his sophomore season. Parker didn’t have the big flashy news conference that we have become accustomed to, but rather he sat down with pen and paper (or keyboard and computer) and put his thoughts together for Sports Illustrated.

Breaking Down Mel Kiper Jr.'s Mock Draft

Parker was rumored to make his announcement either Tuesday or Wednesday, but when no announcement came the media read between the lines of what it could mean for his future. The reality is that it was likely due to Parker getting the words right and getting his message as well as his decision across in a clear way. Here is a segment of what Parker had to say in his open letter:

I haven't consulted many people during this process. I talked to my parents, though. They simply said it was my decision and they would stand behind me either way. They just want me to be happy.
Ultimately, I boiled my decision down to two simple questions:
Which environment -- college or the NBA -- offers me the best opportunity to grow as a basketball player?
Which environment -- college or the NBA -- offers me the best opportunity to grow and develop off the court?
The answer to both questions is undeniably the NBA.

Parker could be on to something with his open letter that would be a step in the right direction for professional sports. This letter was more sincere and more thought out than any press conference ever aired on television. This gave you a look into the man and his inner struggle with his career, education and commitment to religion and family.

The team that decides to draft Parker is getting a great NBA prospect and a better person in the process. More players should look into the process Parker took and write a letter to the fans and media with their decision. Not only was this a breath of fresh air, but it gave us a look at the man and not the player. That is as rare as it gets in the sporting world.
