Alex Smith Trade: What Does it Mean For Chiefs' Draft?

With Alex Smith heading to Kansas City, the Chiefs still have unanswered questions as to what they will do with the No.1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Now that the quarterback position has been filled, the Chiefs will look elsewhere on draft day.

Enter Luke Joeckel. The former Texas A&M lineman was projected by many to be the No.1 overall selection on draft day even before the deal for Smith was made.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, who first reported the Chiefs' interest in Smith, is also reporting that the team is very high on Joeckel as expected. Rapoport expects the Chiefs to draft Joekel and allow OT Branden Albert to explore free agency, freeing up cap space.

Joeckel is the surest bet for Kansas City on draft day, but at 2-14 last season, there are multiple needs for different positions. Securing their starting quarterback may give the Chiefs the opportunity to trade back a few spots and pick up a much needed WR or DE.

However, the safe money is for the Chiefs to fully invest in Alex Smith with a potential All Pro OT for protection and a WR in a later round.
