The 2014 edition Masters kicks off Thursday as the PGA Tour kicks into gear with the years first major. The well covered story lines are more about who’s not playing as opposed to who is playing. Tiger Woods is out of the Masters after back surgery that will put Woods on the shelf for two months. Fellow top-5 golfers Phil Mickelson and Jason Day enter the tournament reeling from injuries as well. Mickelson is battling an oblique/back problem, while Day has damage in his thumb.

Other golfers in contention include Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson-Gretzky and Sergio Garcia. The last two Masters’ champions have been determined in a playoff with Adam Scott and Bubba Watson winning in 2013 and 2012 respectively. Augusta National was established in 1934 and has continued a long running tradition of kicking off the golf season and the spring. The course is 7,435 yards in length and par is 72. the course record of -18 was set by Woods back in 1997 when he won his first of four Masters by an unprecedented 12 strokes. The tournaments purse is $8 million with the winner walking away with roughly $1.5 million.

Regardless of Tiger’s presence, the Masters is must watch television among the sports community. Watch the live stream in the link above.
