Joe Dumars to Cavaliers? Pistons GM to resign, good outweighs bad for Detroit legacy? [VIDEO]

According to The Detroit News, Pistons President of basketball operations Joe Dumars will resign from the position before the end of the season. Dumars has come under fire after his large free agency class, yet still missing the playoffs for the fifth straight season.

Vincent Goodwill reported the story and said this comes as no surprise to the Detroit Pistons owner.

Pistons owner Tom Gores had expected before the season that the team would return to the playoffs.Gores fired Dumars' hand-picked coach, Maurice Cheeks, after just 50 games, making it one of the top-five quickest firings in the last 20 years. After Dumars tried to save Cheeks' job, according to an NBA source. It became clear the two sides, bound together by circumstance, were headed for divorce.

The report hints at tension between Dumars and Gores concerning the status of head coach Maurice Cheecks, which would also give some merit to the report that Gores is not surprised by Dumars resignation. Stephen A. Smith of ESPN believes Dumars legacy in Detroit will remain a good one.

Assuming that he resigns, (his legacy is) simple. I think that when the dust clears, he'll be known as an elite executive and champion. Championships as a player and a coach. Two straight Finals and six straight conference finals as an executive. This man knew how, showed how, to build a team, showed how to keep guys together and focused on the prize.

Some fear that Dumars' legacy will be remembered as the man who drafted Darko Milicic over the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, but it looks like Dumars will be remembered as the great executive he was. Rumors are already circulation that Dumars will be in the running for the Cavaliers president position along with Isah Thomas.
