Mike D'Antoni may become the head coach of the Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball team, and it's entirely his fault.
Earlier this week, ESPN.com reported that Marshall reached out to the Los Angeles Lakers head coach to determine whether he had interest in coaching at his alma mater.
D'Antoni's days with the Lakers appear to be numbered. He is leading the franchise to its worst record since moving to Los Angeles in 1960. Kobe Bryant recently said while he felt D'Antoni hasn't gotten a fair shake in L.A., he'd rather not play for D'Antoni next season.
CBSSports.com is reporting that an anonymous source has indicated that D'Antoni is returning the affection shown by Marshall.
"I would think his days are numbered based on Kobe saying he had no interest in playing for him next year," a source told CBSSports.com. "If he isn't with the Lakers, I believe he will be at Marshall because there is mutual interest."
According to the report, D'Antoni is from West Virginia and attended Marshall from 1970-73.
But as Sports on Earth reported, D'Antoni was doomed from the time he accepted the Lakers' job in 2012 because he wasn't going to make both Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard happy, not to mention the fact that he had no time to implement his offense.
But Sports on Earth also flashes back to May, 2008, when both the Chicago Bulls and the New York Knicks sought the services of the coach that had just missed leading the Phoenix Suns to the NBA finals in back-to-back seasons.
D'Antoni wasn't getting along with Suns general manager Steve Kerr, and the Bulls and Knicks were in an intense competition for his services.
Sports on Earth reported that the Bulls thought they were going to acquire the coach who would lead Joakim Noah, Luol Deng and the top draft pick in the 2008 draft, which would be Derek Rose, to more NBA titles.
But D'Antoni chose to sign with the Knicks for four years for $24 million. He coached star Carmelo Anthony, whom Sports on Earth stated wasn't a fit for his system either.
D'Antoni was promised autonomy, but it was Anthony who had the ear of owner Jim Dolan, Sports on Earth reported.
The path D'Antoni now has him close to being out of the NBA for a long time if he takes over at Memphis.
