Will current Houston Rockets assistant coach Kelvin Sampson become the new coach of the University of Houston Cougars?
Yahoo! Sports is reporting that sources have confirmed that Sampson and University of Houston officials are engaged in talks that would make the former the new tactician of the Cougars.
The website added that Sampson met with university officials the past week, and that the "two sides have grown increasingly comfortable about entering into a partnership."
The sources added that an agreement could be finalized in the next few days although there are still some difficulties that could hinder a potential deal. The university is still considering to interview one more candidate before potentially settling with Sampson.
Sampson is a familiar face in college basketball having coached Washington State, Indiana and Oklahoma in the past. He took the latter to the 2002 Final Four. He has led his teams to the NCAA tournament in 13 separate times. He is known for instilling defense and aggressive, physical play among his players. But Sampson also earned controversy for making prohibited calls to recruits during his stints with the Hoosiers and Sooners.
He has also been interviewed for NBA coaching jobs with Charlotte and Milwaukee last year. He has been part of coaching staffs in San Antonio, Milwaukee and Houston.
According to Yahoo, "Houston is determined to hire a proven winner on the major college level to restore a long and proud basketball history." The school is trying to hire Sampson to compete with other competent head coaches in the American Athletic COnfernce like Kevin Ollie and Larry Brown.
