Amir Khan next fight 2014: Luis Collazo set for undercard clash on Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana card [VIDEO]

Amir Khan lobbied long and hard for a matchup with Floyd Mayweather Jr., who strung out his decision for a May 3 opponent for months before landing on hard-hitting Argentine Marcos Maidana.

Amir Khan refusing to fight Adrien Broner?

Mayweather issued a challenge to Khan to beat Adrien Broner, Floyd's "lil bro," to earn a shot at the pound-for-pound king, but Khan responded on Twitter by calling Mayweather "full of s**t."

Now, Khan will be fighting on the Mayweather vs. Maidana undercard against WBA welterweight international title holder Luis Collazo. The Brooklyn-born Collazo stormed the boxing scene by knocking out Victor Ortiz in a Thursday bout on Fox Sports 1 at the Barclays Center in less than two rounds, then called out Mayweather after the victory.

Collazo's call-out seemed laughable at the time, but if he can take care of business vs. Khan impressively, he may not be that far away from his coveted title shot.

Khan blasts Floyd as "scared"?

"Both Amir Khan and Luis Collazo have made it known that they want a shot at the winner of the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana, so what better way for them to prove that they're next," Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said.

Come May 3, Khan will have been out of the ring for over a year, so taking on Collazo could be a dangerous proposition as Ortiz learned. "I'm looking forward to fighting in Las Vegas once again, and my intention on May 3 is to make a statement that I belong on this big stage," Khan said.

"Luis Collazo might be coming off of a big win, but I am in incredible shape and am ready for this challenge. A win on May 3 is what I need to prove that I truly am one of the best welterweights in the sport."

Collazo though, is relishing the thought that he'll be overlooked once again against a more heralded opponent. Collazo is supremely confident he'll rise to the top of the division.

"Defeating Victor Ortiz in January was just the beginning," Collazo said. "Facing and beating Amir Khan on the biggest stage in the sport is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I will take full advantage of this and put myself in the best position to face the winner of the main event. I hope Khan is ready because Brooklyn is coming to take him down."
