With the Lakers saying that the team doesn't plan to be active this offseason in the free agent market as they await the 2015 offseason to sign some free agent stars, it appears Los Angeles point guard Steve Nash may not be waived before next season, though the NBA veteran said if he does end up getting waived by the Lakers he would retire.
According to SI.com, it's looking less likely that Nash will be traded next season.
Nash will make $10 million in the final year of his contract next year, but the Lakers have the option of using the stretch provision which would enable the franchise to reduce their salary cap number by spreading Nash's deal out over the course of three seasons.
Nash told Bleacher Report that he would likely retire if he was waived by the Lakers before his deal is up.
"That would be it," Nash told the site about his career. "I'll either be back here or I'll be done."
Nash said "yeah, it sounds like it," when he was asked about whether or not the Lakers will have him play for them next year. Nash, 40, has been sidelined with a back injury while the Lakers have endured a season of horrors.
Los Angeles is 21-41 and will likely miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Making matters worse, the team is coming off its most lopsided loss in franchise history to the rival Clippers, who shelled them 142-94 on Thursday night.
It seems as though Nash will be back for the Lakers next season barring injury complications, but if the team opts to waive him it could be the end of the line for the veteran point guard.
