On Tuesday Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced that he will fight power-punching Marcos Maidana on May 3rd on pay-per-view; this fight will be a real measure of "The Money Team's" promotional prowess, with very stiff competition around his date.

Mayweather vs. Maidana made to protect Adrien Broner?

Mayweather's always been a big-time draw, but after a 2013 in which there were just four major pay-per-view events, "Money's" May fight will be the June leg of a four-month stretch that features four PPVs.

On March 8th Canelo Alvarez, a superstar whose light was only dimmed slightly by Mayweather's tactical decimation of him in September 2013, will take on Alfredo Angulo. While the matchup is not incredible, it promises to be an action fight which most fans prefer to defensive standoffs.

Amir Khan rips Mayweather for "running scared."

In April, Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather's chief antagonist in the media, will take on Timothy Bradley in a grudge match of their 2012 bout in which Bradley walked away with a questionable split decision. Pacquiao was once considered Mayweather's PPV equal, and although he has fallen off this matchup will have more unpredictability.

On top of that, most of the blame for the two megastars never fighting has landed on Mayweather's shoulders, because of his insistence on stringent drug testing, and refusal to work with Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum.

Then, in June after Mayweather's date, Miguel Cotto will fight middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in Madison Square Garden. Again, neither is the star that Floyd is, but their fight could be more compelling because the fighters are on similar levels.

The main issue facing Mayweather after he outclassed Alvarez is that fans aren't convinced anyone near his weight class can challenge him. Maidana's power inspires dread in most, but boxing fans have seen Mayweather dominate powerful fighters like Cotto, Alvarez and Robert Guerrero before. If the outcome isn't in question, why spend $70 on a high-definition pay-per-view, especially if other quality fighters are putting on more competitive fights?

The success of this battle may well hinge on Maidana convincing the world he might get that coveted KO.
