The New York Jets are expressing interest in signing veteran quarterback Michael Vick as a backup to second-year signal caller Geno Smith.

According to DigitalJournal.com, the Jets are much more interested in having Vick serve as Smith's backup, as opposed to former sixth overall pick Mark Sanchez, whom the website reports has not been showing the skil level the team feels it needs to move forward after sitting out all of last season with an injury to his right-throwing arm.

The 33-year-old Vick started several early games for the Philadelphia Eagles last season before suffering a hamstring injury and being replaced in the lineup by Nick Foles. In seven games, Vick passed for 1,215 yards and five touchdowns. Playing in rookie coach Chip Kelly's spread offense, Vick also rushed for 306-yards and two scores.

After an up-and-down rookie season, during which he passed for 3,046 yards and 12 touchdowns, but also threw 21 interceptions, the Jets are hoping that the 23-year-old Smith will learn and benefit from playing alongside Vick.

Vick's best season came came with the Eagles in 2011 when he passed for 3,303 yards and 18 touchdowns. That same season, he also rushed for 589 yards and a score.
