Floyd Mayweather Jr. may be driving boxing fans and reporters crazy with the drawn out process of picking an opponent for May 3rd, but he seems to have pushed potential opponent Amir Khan totally over the edge.
Khan, long thought of as the next opponent for Floyd, took to Twitter to vent about how long Mayweather is taking to pick. "No response from Mayweather or his team. Fights not happening. I should of taken the title fight last December against Alexander...," Khan tweeted.
He also expressed that he felt disrespected by "The Money Team," and wished Marcos Maidana good luck in May pre-emptively, despite there being no confirmation that Maidana is Floyd's choice. Finally, he apologized to his fans for making them think a bout was in the offing. "Can I apologies to the thousands of people who are let down. You me and everyone wanted the Mayweather fight. He's running scared."
Despite Khan's obvious dismay and conviction that he's been left out in the cold, Maidana's adviser Sebastian Contursi refused to admit any deal had been reached.
"Until Mayweather's people send us a signed contract (that Floyd is facing) Maidana, which so far has not happened, frankly I can not say that the fight is confirmed," Contursi said.
"If the Mayweather fight happens, I think it would certainly be one of the most important in the history of boxing in our country (Argentina)."
Maidana's recent resume gives him an edge over Khan, who hasn't fought since April of last year. Maidana knocked down Mayweather's protégé Adrien Broner twice in December, en route to a convincing victory in December.
However, stylistically Maidana resembles many of Mayweather's recent conquests; Khan's top selling point has been his hand speed and fighting style presenting Floyd with a challenge he's never seen before.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer is one believer in Khan's ability to create a compelling fight. "One thing that we know is that it seems like size and power is not really going to help to solve the Floyd Mayweather puzzle. So maybe the one thing that can solve it is speed and skill. I'm not going to say that Amir Khan's skills are better than Floyd Mayweather's skills, because I believe that Floyd is, maybe, the most skilled fighter of any generation and of all time. He's just the smartest guy in the ring," Schaefer said.
