Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre admitted that he didn't watch Johnny Manziel play too much, but after he watched a Texas A&M game in October, the NFL legend began to agree with the comparisons that many people have drawn between the two signal callers.
According to USA Today, Favre watched the Aggies quarterback play an Oct. 12 game for three quarters against Mississippi during a 41-38 victory that saw Manziel go 31-for-39 for 349 yards while rushing for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
"I almost thought I was watching film of a young Brett Favre," he told the newspaper. "I didn't think I did a lot of things well [in college at Southern Miss], but he did. And I liked the attitude of 'whatever it takes' -- from that standpoint, I liked him."
Manziel who is six-feet while Favre is 6-foot-2 has shown a Favre-like ability to improvise in the pocket and make things happen. Manziel has drawn many comparisons to Favre, and did an interview on The Dan Patrick Show in 2012 where he even compared himself to Favre, who was a Super Bowl champion with the Green Bay Packers and an 11-time Pro Bowler during his career.
"If I had to throw a comparison out there, too, Brett Favre -- what a guy he was and a true gunslinger," Manziel told the program. "If I was throwing the ball in the backyard, with my Green Bay Packers' No. 4 jersey on, when I was a kid, that's who I was trying to be like."
Manziel is seen as one of the top quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft, and may even be selected first overall by the Houston Texans as the team is in the market for an upgrade under center.
Favre said he believes that Manziel is already a better passer than he was when he entered the draft in 1991.
"I didn't throw near as well as him," Favre told the newspaper. "He may have that capability -- unbelievable throws and can make plays with his feet. I was impressed."
Through two years and 26 games with Texas A&M, Manziel went 595-for-863 (68.9%) for 7,820 yards with 63 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. In his 20 year career, Favre threw for a 62.0 completion percentage while passing for 71,838 yards with 508 scores and 336 picks.
If Favre is correct, Manziel's career may mirror or surpass Favre's over the next few years, and it all starts with the 2014 NFL Draft.
